Athletic Hall of Fame
East High School Athletic Hall of Fame
In 2006, East High and it`s Alumni Association created an Athletic Hall of Fame. On February 10, 2007, 90 athletes and coaches (53 boys, 18 girls, and 19 Coaches) were inducted into the Hall of Fame. There is a Wall of Fame in the lobby of the entrance to the Pat Panek Gym at East where there are individual plaques commemorating their induction into the Hall of Fame. Each of the 90 persons inducted also received a plaque commemorating their induction. Additional athletes will be inducted annually in future years. When that happens, they will be commemerated here. The persons shown on this page are either graduates from the Class of 1956 or persons of interest to the Class of 1956. |

Charles C. Newcomb Class of 1956 Inducted February 10, 2007
Chuck Newcomb was a coach`s dream wish come true. He was talented in any sport he set his mind to. In his three years at East, he starred for the football, basketball, and track teams. He achieved All-City in football twice, All-City in basketball and track three years apiece, and All-State in both basketball and track in 1955 and 1956. He attended Colorado State University where he made All-Conference three times in basketball and one time in track. He was also District 2 All-American in Football and is an inductee of the CSU Sports Hall of Fame. |

Lanny T. Reichert Class of 1956 Inducted February 10, 2007
In the 50`s, it was quite unusual to see young men achieving in two related sports. Lanny Reichert was such a young man in 1956. He won All-City and All-State honors in both gymnastics and swimming. In gymnastics he excelled in both tumbling and trampoline. On the swimming team, he excelled as a diver. |
Ronald D. Shavlik Class of 1952 Inducted February 10, 2007
Many observers believe that Ron Shavlik was one of the greatest basketball players to prep in Colorado. He was the dominating figure in DPS basketball for three years and earned three All-City honors and two All-State honors. He led his teams to state titles in 1951 and 1952 and was named MVP for both tournaments. For many years, his career scoring total of 710 points was the best in Colorado. He earned All-American honors at North Carolina State and played for the New York Knicks. He was recently named to the Colorado High Schools Activities Association Hall of Fame. |

James R. Sheff Class of 1955 Inducted February 10, 2007
Jim Sheff established himself as one of East`s greatest swimmers. He went undefeated in three years of competition, winning All-City and All-State honors in 1953, 1954, and 1955. East`s swimming team won the State Championship in these three years too. Jim swam for the University of Colorado while earning a Chemical Engineering Degree. He later attended the University of Washington where he earned a Masters Degree and a PHD in Nuclear Engineering. After working 20 Years in the Nuclear field, he became a Professor at UMass-Lowell where he is today. |
Robert D. Erickson Class of 1956 Inducted April 12, 2008
Bob Erickson would come to epitomize the true East High athlete in the 1950`s. He would excel in three sports and lead his teams in football, wrestling, and track. His main fame would be in football where he was selected to the All-City, All-Metropolitan, and All-State teams. In his senior year, he won the coveted Gold Helmet Award, presented by the Denver Post to the outstanding football player in Colorado for that year. He was also a standout wrestler and was named All-City. He won the Thomas McCann MVP for wrestling. Bob entered Northwestern University and played football for two years before an injury forced him out of the game. |

Stanley L. Williams Class of 1956 Inducted April 12, 2008
To be called a great basketball player at East High School may seem to be insignificant since there have been so many. Stanley Williams will take his place as one of the great scorers and competitors in East basketball lore. He was a unanimous All-City and All-State selection in 1956. He graduated from the University of Colorado where he earned All-Conference honors in basketball. |
